Vitality started with a garage lab in Fremont, California, in the summer of 2022, bringing in local high school student interns to help work on some projects. Eventually, much of the control of the research was handed over to the students. However, how could we count on the students to run the whole place?
In order to trust these students, we need them to go through real challenges and be committed to the lab, not just involved. After drawing inspiration from a combination of many, many different educational programs and adjusting for high school students, Vitality was developed.
Especially with some of our experiences, there is a large expectation by parents to shield students here from many real-world challenges while still expecting them to do “well” in school and accomplish certain goals in life. The result, much of the time, is students not enjoying what they do. Contrast this to many so-called underprivileged communities, where students have much less in terms of monetary wealth but much more in terms of genuine happiness.
Students at Vitality have fun, while enduring hard challenges in every way, taking initiative, all while being in the service of humanity. We now have the opportunity, thanks to both monetary and humanitarian support, to help start additional Vitality programs.
